Frequently asked questions - how to eliminate odours

What Is Ozone?

Simply stated, Ozone (O3) is a molecule composed of 3 oxygen atoms. Because of it's short half life, ozone only stays in it's molecular form for 20-30 min.

Can I Breathe Ozone?

Ozone is a know lung irritant in high concentrations. It may cause throat irritation/coughing, chest pain, and shortness of breath. A respirator mask is required when performing high concentration shock treatments. Allow 1-2 hours for the ozone to dissipate after a shock treatment before entering the area (ozone's half life is 20-30min).

How Is Ozone created?

Modern ozone generators create ozone by drawing oxygen over highly charged plates. A fan is used to disperse the ozone into an area for treatment.

How Does Ozone Eliminate Odours?

Once generated by ozone generators, ozone (O3) is highly reactive and 1 of the 3 oxygen atoms splits off the molecule and attaches itself to any pollutant particle it comes in contact with. This is referred to as "oxidization".  As a result, the particle will no longer be toxic and is destroyed. Once the single oxygen atom oxidizes the particle, it too is destroyed. All that is left behind is the O2 molecule...pure, clean oxygen.

Will Ozone Affect Food, Paintings, Computers/Electrical Devices?

No, ozone has no adverse effects on these items.

Is Odour Removal Guaranteed?

Yes, it is guaranteed, provided that the source of the odour has been removed completely - ie/ smoke-infested carpet. Ozone will not penetrate into carpet, textured ceilings, wood, drywall, or concrete.

Will Odours Return?

As long as the 'source of the odour' has been removed from the area, the odour will not return. This is because ozone will "oxidize" pollutant particles, destroying them.

How Does An Ozone Shock Treatment Work?

  • Prior to starting the treatment, there must be no people, pets, or plants in the home or premises (plants may be sealed in plastic bags, if they're unable to be removed from the home or premises). Nothing else will be harmed by the treatment.
  • Equipment setup takes 10-15min.
  • If the home has a forced air furnace, the air filter is removed and the fan placed on circulate for the duration of the treatment. This will allow ozone to circulate throughout the HVAC system and eradicate any bacteria and contaminants which may be present.
  • A typical 1200 sq.ft home requires 5-6 hours for a treatment. For severe odours, such as cigarette smoke, treatment time is typically 8-10 hours, depending on the square footage of the home and severity of the odour.
  • Once the generator is in operation, no one will be allowed into the premises, as high concentrations of ozone gas will be present.
  • Upon completion of the shock treatment, we return to the premises to remove all equipment.  Occupants are not allowed into the premises for 2 hours after the treatment has been completed. After 2 hours, occupants are then able to enter back in and open windows (if applicable), allowing fresh air to purge any remaining ozonated air. The ventilation process typically takes 2-3 hours.
  • A fresh, sanitized smell will be encountered. It will be noticeable for the next 24-48 hours. Then there will be a very minimal sanitized smell remaining for the next 3-4 days, dependent on the length of the shock treatment and the amount of fabric (curtains, furniture, bedding) exposed. Odour neutral will be achieved after approximately 7 days. ozone generator rental Edmonton St. Albert Spruce Grove
